What children really need when parents separate

  • 0:51 min

One of the greatest gifts we can give our children is our attention.

Not just being there — but being present.

Children flourish when they feel listened to, noticed, and included in family life. Simple moments — a shared meal, a chat on the school run, laughter at the dinner table — tell them they belong. It’s in these everyday interactions that children feel truly loved and secure.

Screens have become part of everyday life, but they can also get in the way of real connection. When mealtimes or evenings are spent scrolling rather than talking, children can start to feel unseen. Setting aside even a little time without devices can help everyone feel more present and valued.

It’s never too late to reconnect. Switching off devices, sharing a meal together, or taking a walk can make all the difference. These small acts remind children that they matter — and that love isn’t about presence alone, but attention.

When families choose communication over conflict, and connection over distraction, everyone thrives.
